I see why John Elway was so successful as a car salesman.
Elway who had a very successful chain of car dealerships in the Denver area (and a
few other locations) before selling them off and joining the Denver Broncos
front office made the biggest signing of the offseason by convincing Peyton
Manning to join the Broncos.
All last year, Elway tried to sell Broncos’ fans that he
believed in Tim Tebow and that Tebow would be his starter this season but
Honest John had other plans. Elway wanted a more conventional quarterback to
fill Denver’s starting position but he knew he couldn’t bring just anyone in to
play there.
Tebow’s popularity made it impossible to bring in a rookie
or unproven player to replace him so Elway had to be overjoyed when the
Indianapolis Colts released Manning. This gave the opportunistic Elway a chance
to kill two birds with one stone.
With Manning’s signing, Elway gets a Super Bowl winner and
4-time MVP to come in and lead his team. He also gets the opportunity to slip
Tebow out through the back door which is something Elway has wanted to do all
along. With all of the attention that Manning commands it allows Elway
to quietly shop the gritty Tebow to the highest bidder.
Don’t look for Elway to get much for Tebow though. Most
teams have their quarterback situations set so Tebow won’t be a very attractive
option for many teams.
Still there should be some demand for a high-character
winner like Tebow so expect Tebow to be wearing new colors next season. Tebow
is pretty much an afterthought in Denver though.
The question that Broncos’ fans want to know now is how far
can Manning take a team that went 8-8 with Tebow as a starter last season?
The AFC West has been a pretty weak division over the past
few years so Manning’s presence makes them an instant favorite to win the
division. Manning is expected to take them much further than Tebow did winning a
division title and a playoff game though; the expectation now is to play in the
Super bowl.
Do you think the Broncos will make it to the Super Bowl this season? Let us know your thought.
