Week 1 NFL Rookie QB Report: Redskins’ RG3 Rules

Week 1 of the 2012 NFL season saw a record five rookies starting at the quarterback position for their respective teams. Only two guys were projected to be opening-day starters for their teams when these guys were drafted back in April.

Before this year, no more than two rookie quarterbacks have started Week 1 of a season so the 2012 quarterback class has already pushed its way into the record books but could this quarterback class prove to be the best of all-time?

Record number of rookie quarterbacks slated to start Week 1 of season

So far the number is holding at three which would be a record according the Elias Sports Bureau. Since the AFL-NFL merger, no more than two rookie quarterbacks have started Week 1 of the season as their team’s starting quarterback.

That looks to change with the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck, the Washington Redskins’ Robert Griffin III and the Cleveland Browns’ Brandon Weeden all expected to start the season at quarterback for their respective teams.

Bird’s eye view: Michael Vick’s ex-teammate says Robert Griffin III is better

Washington Redskins’ cornerback DeAngelo Hall has a perspective that no one in the league has concerning quarterback Robert Griffin III and the player he will most likely be compared to throughout his career: Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Michael Vick.

Hall played with Vick for three seasons as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. He has also had to play against Vick a lot in recent years since his Redskins play the Eagles twice a year so he knows Vick very well. He has seen Vick’s development from an athlete to a quarterback.

Don’t ask, don’t tell: Robert Griffin III says he would support a gay teammate

It seems that President Barack Obama isn’t the only high-profile D.C. resident who has expressed his support for the gay community. Washington Redskins’ rookie Robert Griffin III stated that he would have no problem playing with an openly gay teammate.

Griffin was among a dozen rookies and former stars who were interviewed by Outsports.com, a website that caters to the gay sports community. Rookies Trent Richardson and Coby Fleener were also interviewed as well as former players Jevon Kearse, Ahman Green and Eddie George.

Robert Griffin III arrives on 25th anniversary of Doug Williams’ Super Bowl season

When Robert Griffin III was drafted by the Washington Redskins earlier this year, he had no idea that he would be walking into history. 2012 will mark the 25th anniversary of Redskins’ quarterback Doug Williams’ Super Bowl winning season.

What is Williams' significance in relation to Griffin III? Williams’ is the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Can the Cardinals win with Kevin Kolb?

The Arizona Cardinals’ fortunes are tied very heavily to their quarterback situation. When Kurt Warner was their starter they won. When Derek Anderson or Matt Leinert started they lost. When John Skelton started they went 5-2 (not including a win against the San Francisco 49ers that Skelton orchestrated after Kevin Kolb went down early in the first quarter) but interestingly enough they were only 2-6 when Kolb took most of the snaps in a game.
