Shrewd move by New England Patriots picking up TE Jake Ballard

The New England Patriots continue to show why they are one of the best organizations in the NFL. The New York Giants waived tight end Jake Ballard in hopes that no one would claim him. They wanted to bring him back by putting him on their Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

But the Patriots claimed Ballard off waivers and now own the tight end’s rights which puts them in a great position going forward.

One, they snatch a really good player away from the team that beat them in the Super Bowl. Ballard is expected to miss the season due to a knee injury but he would have been back to full health by the start of the 2013 season.

The Patriots really don’t need Ballard this year since they have Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez playing for them this season but Hernandez will be looking for a new contract soon. Ballard could be insurance just in case the Patriots decide not to sign Hernandez or are unable to when his contract expires.

The Patriots have already signed Gronkowski to an extension. If they are able to re-sign Hernandez also then Ballard will either make a great backup or the Patriots can trade Ballard to help them upgrade another position.

And they could even add insult to injury by trading Ballard to someone in the Giants’ division. Like I said, this move puts the Patriots in a great position going forward but what else would you expect from Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots organization?
