Can Matt Shaub lead Texans to the playoffs?

The Houston Texans played great last season and most people consider them a lock to make it back to the playoffs in 2012 due to their explosive offense and top-ranked defense but will Matt Schaub be under center when they get there?

That’s actually a good question when you consider how many games Schaub has missed during his time in Houston. In the five years he has been with the Texans, Schaub has had his season cut short twice due to injuries and missed a big chunk of another season.

It is promising that he went two straight seasons without missing a game but it doesn’t matter when you are missing in action for your franchise’s first ever playoff appearance. Schaub’s numbers were great as usual even with his favorite target Andre Johnson also missing a lot of games last season but Schaub needs to prove he can stay healthy and be in the lineup when his team needs him the most.

Especially considering how dominant this team is with him at the helm. The Texans were 7-3 with Schaub in the lineup but only 3-3 without him. Houston easily dispatched the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the playoffs but they really could have used Schaub’s ability to put up points in their second round loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

So that will be the challenge for Schaub and the Texans’ coaching staff this season. Houston will work hard to return to the playoffs this year but keeping Schaub healthy has also got to be a big priority.

And expectations are higher now that the Texans have tasted the playoffs. Just making it to the post season won’t be enough this year to satisfy this team or its fans but if the Texans do make another playoff appearance with Schaub still in the lineup, then no team is going to want to face this team in the post season.
