Ravens’ Joe Flacco looking to have a Manning-like season

As ludicrous as it sounded we all know why he said it. Baltimore Raven’s starting quarterback Joe Flacco felt like he had been put on the spot when a radio station announcer asked him if he thought he was one of the top-five best quarterbacks in the league.

Showing a lack of poise that has seemed to haunt him at times on the field also, he responded with all of the machismo he could muster at the time instead of taking the safe approach and deferring to his team’s accomplishments under his leadership.

And just like Eli Manning who made similar comments before last season, Flacco will be expected to back up his words on the field. Manning vindicated himself with one of the best seasons of his career leading the New York Giants to a Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots.

Flacco’s team fell just short of the Super Bowl last year so it’s not as if he isn’t capable of accomplishing what Manning did last season. Like Manning though, he will have to prove that he can eliminate some of the costly mistakes that have hurt his team.

Although he has never had a 20-interception season like Manning, Flacco has consistently tossed around 12 interceptions all four years he has been in the league. He threw five less touchdowns last year than he did in 2010 and threw two more interceptions than the previous year.

Flacco was also a little more fumble-prone than he had been in the past. The Ravens don’t expect Flacco to put up numbers like Tom Brady or Drew Brees but he is expected to protect the ball which he failed at miserably.

But with the Ravens again looking like championship contenders for the 2012 season, Flacco will definitely get the chance to prove that he wasn’t just mouthing off. Let’s see if the Ravens will put their money where his mouth is.

Do you feel that Flacco will take the Ravens to the Super Bowl this season? Let us know your thoughts.
