Boy, John Elway would make a good car salesman wouldn’t he?
Like a good salesman, he says all the right things hoping that you take the
bait. Well if you are a Denver Broncos’ fan or better yet a Tim Tebow fan then
you better watch “Honest Johnny’s” actions closely in the upcoming months.
Why? Because Elway tap danced around the Tebow issue all season long and while he has publicly voiced support for Tebow, Elway is currently making plans to replace his super popular starting quarterback.
Broncos’ head coach John Fox recently told the media that
the Broncos were looking to bring in two quarterbacks for the start of the 2012
season. Although it didn’t come directly from Elway’s mouth rest assured that
Fox and Elway are and have always been on the same page concerning the Tebow
issue. They like him but he is not what they envision as their quarterback of
the future.
Seriously, why would you need to bring in two quarterbacks
if you have a competent starter? Most teams go two-deep at the quarterback
position so unless they are looking to get rid of someone then bringing in two
quarterbacks isn’t necessary.
Now it could be that they are looking to let backup
quarterback Brady Quinn go and want to make sure they have a couple guys behind
Tebow just in case he gets injured. Tebow has a physical style that almost
assures he will get injured at some point so maybe Elway and Fox are trying to
protect against that happening.
I’m pretty sure some of the more naïve Broncos’ fans will
buy that excuse from Honest John but anyone that has watched this whole
situation unfold knows the truth. Elway is not convinced that Tebow will
continue to have success winning games the way he has and wants to have a
quarterback more to his liking in place when Tebow falters.
Just look at what happened in Minnesota and Tennessee during
the past offseason. Both sent their starting quarterbacks packing and brought
in two fresh faces. Each team brought in a veteran to keep the ship afloat and
a rookie quarterback to groom as the future face of the franchise.
Elway has something similar in mind for the Broncos. He hopes
to sign a quarterback who Broncos’ fans won’t mind getting the nod over Tebow
like Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn but if not then he will still bring in a veteran
quarterback to play behind Tebow just in case Tebow stumbles.
Regardless of what veteran Elway signs to compete with
Tebow, he is definitely going to draft a quarterback for the future to fill the
other quarterback slot he and Fox are looking to fill. This has been one of Elway’s
top priorities since being hired as the executive vice president of football
operations for the Broncos last year.
But don’t take my word for it, all you have to do is just sit
back and watch how this offseason unfolds. If you’re a die-hard Broncos’ or
Tebow fan and you are buying what Honest John is selling then let this article serve
as a “buyer beware” warning. Unless you’re buying a car from one of his
dealerships then in that case you’re on your own.
